French Cafés in Free Fall

Steven Erlanger in today's New York Times reports a frightening statistic : "In 1960, France had 200,000 cafes," said Bernard Quartier, president of the National Federation of Cafes, Brasseries and Discotheques. "Now it has fewer than 41,500, with an average of two closing every day."

The culprits are largely the ban on smoking in cafés and restaurants, and of course the hellish descent into economic depression. Oh, yes, young people go to the supermarket, get a 3 euro bottle of plonque and sit at home with their cigarettes and get loaded while watching reality tee vee.

Barack Obama : American President

A Letter from Keith Donovan, Artist living in France, arrived this morning :

You'll no doubt laugh at this story, but yesterday I went as usual on my bike to the vegetable farmer a few miles away, around 4:30. It'd been a lovely day but some dark gray clouds were blowing up in the eastern sky. The sun was low in the west and lit up an immense rainbow that went in a full arc, touching the ground on both ends. It was full, vibrant and bright and, after going through a long field with it on my left I turned into it, driving my bicycle into the rainbow. Such a strange, lovely thing to drive into a rainbow. I thought to DH Lawrence of course, the bible of course, and even Jesse Jackson of all people. But I thought mostly of "Hopey" and his campaign symbol and couldn't help laughing and thinking how did David Plouffe do that! – Best, Keith

Sarah Palin Field Dresses Lady Liberty

Famous artist Zina Saunders takes on Famous Snowbilly Sarah Palin as the Alaskan wrestles the Statue of Liberty in the snowy tundra, and shows off her skills! Sarah Palin, painted for Women's Work, an online gallery exhibit of women's political art.

Zina routinely paints zingers for The San Francisco Chronicle Magazine and other newspapers. We'd love to see her take on Anne Coulter, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and Palin cheerleader, William Kristol, editor of The Weekly Standard. Maybe a group portrait in the nursery?
